Raet national park

Many experiences in Southern Norway’s first national park - Raet.

Do you enjoy swimming off delightful beaches, canoeing, boat trips, camping, walking in a unique natural setting, cycling, fishing, diving, birdwatching, visiting idyllic outlying harbours or exploring cultural heritage? If so, welcome to Raet National Park in Arendal, Grimstad and Tvedestrand in Southern Norway.

This is Raet National Park

Raet National Park was created in 2016 to protect the special natural area which extends from the Valøyene islands off Grimstad along the entire Arendal coastal strip to Lyngør in Tvedestrand. The park covers a total of 607 square kilometres of coastal nature and sea.

See signs of the ice age

Raet contains visible traces of the ice age around 12,000 years ago. When the enormous glacier that once existed in the area retreated, it left behind huge quantities of stone, sand, gravel and clay which it had picked up during its journey. This process led to the creation of a unique coastal landscape.

Hove and Spornes

A fabulous recreational area in Arendal where visitors can bask in the sun or enjoy watching the waves racing to the shore. At Hove and Spornes you can do it all – hiking, swimming, surfing, and much more! The area begins from the moraine within Raet National Park and extends up to the beach along the coast.

Tromoy Church

Ever been to a historical church from the 12 century? Tromoy is home to one such chapel in Arendal, the Tromoy Church. It was built in 1150 in the Romanesque stone style but was later rebuilt in the cruciform design in the 18th century. Today, people visiting Tromoy island flock to this parish to admire its ancient architecture and peaceful atmosphere.

Tromøya

Situated across the town of Arendal, the island of Tromøya. The beautiful landscapes around the island make it a perfect spot for activities like biking and hiking.

Store eller Lille Torungen fyr

Want to experience coastal culture at the far end of the ocean gap at the entrance to Arendal? Then you are welcome to Store or Lille Torungen lighthouses. At Store Torungen, two of the buildings are operated as a tourist cabin with a total of approx. 25 beds. The boathouse at Store and the tower at Lille Torungen are also rented out as "party rooms" for larger and smaller groups. In few places can you experience a similar panoramic view of the archipelago in historical surroundings as at Torungene lighthouse!
