Explore Norway’s tallest and second-largest wooden house in Empire style during your trip to Arendal. Book a guided tour of the magnificent Arendal Old Town Hall!

Your sightseeing trip in Arendal is incomplete without paying a visit to Arendal Old Town Hall! The stunning structure was built between 1812 and 1815 as a private residence and was later taken over by the Arendal municipality. Come, marvel at its empire style architecture, stunning interiors, and beautiful artefacts and paintings.

Touted as the country’s tallest and oldest wooden house, the Arendal Old Town Hall used to be the home of the Kallevig family, one of the affluent families of the 19th-century. It has four floors – the lowest was used as a basement and warehouse for the owner, Morten Michael Kallevig’s trading company, the second floor was where the family dwelled, but also had a dedicated office space, and the third was exclusively used for social gatherings while the 4th floor housed some of the staff. The property was sold to Arendal municipality in 1844 after the owner passed away, and most of the contents were sold in an auction. The building was renovated n 1891 during King Oscar II’s visit to Arendal, and later served as the city’s main town hall until 2004.

When you book a guided tour, you can take your time to explore the interiors of 3rd floor. The portrait collection in the building was started in 1889 and currently comprises the largest collection in the country! You will find portraits of royalty, public officials, parliamentary representatives, mayors, municipal trustees, and even of selected citizens who have contributed to the city’s development. Five chandeliers, the only décor piece that remains from Kallevig’s time, is another attraction to look out for.
