Arendal is known for its scenic waterfronts and plethora of museums that have historical significance. But what if it had a place where you can enjoy some quality family time in a hub of science? Get this and much more by adding Vitensenteret to your bucket list while visiting the city. The Science Centre was initiated as a project in 2006 and by 2010 it became a full-fledged arena of exhibits. This is a place where both children and adults get a complete educational experience while having lots of fun!
The elaborate exhibition is split into four themes involving interactive tests that are suitable for all ages. In ‘Maritime World’, there are installations that teach about Maritime Technology. Some of the exciting games here include ‘Set Sail’ and ‘Rugg the Boat’ that give you a feel of life at sea! The theme ‘Your Body and Health’ involves several physical activities that teach about the cell and its reactivity. For children, this will be a new learning horizon, while for adults it will be an interactive way of revisiting their school days!
Ever wondered how science can help renew energy or what can we do for better energy production? At the ‘Energy in the Environment’ theme, all these questions and much more get answered. Run in a hamster wheel or work with a turbine to get an insight into renewable energy and practical consumption. Does your child dread the thought of learning mathematics? Then ‘Numbers in Total’ is sure to have them falling in love with calculation. The ‘Algebra Race’ and Jumping Rabbits’ are a few of the games here that will make anyone become friends with numbers!
Are you planning to visit this science museum with toddlers but doubtful if they’ll like it? Fret not, because the ‘Pythagoras in the Tare Forest’ activity is meant for the little explorers! It is a separate room where your child can learn about numbers and shapes while playing in a slide and fish pond. The best part is that little ones below 2 years get free entrance!
Vitensenteret also offers dissemination programs for children of different ages with a series of exciting educational activities. These are available in kindergarten, school, and SFO levels with tests and experiments embedded in the curriculum. The programs are available in flexible schedules for different age groups.
Everything in this exhibition involves interaction, experimenting, and learning through your mind, eyes, and hands! Get smitten by the magical ability of science and don’t forget to try the heat camera and the infamous Night Test. During the weekends, the science museum conducts a space travel activity where you get a captivating peek into the cosmos, that too in 3D! The centre also arranges birthday celebrations over the weekend with special activities, food, and a surprise for the birthday child!
On the premises, Vitensenteret also hosts a science shop called VitenButikken where there are interesting games and cool experiments to purchase. Refresh yourself at café VitenBiten, where tasty snacks and hot coffee are available. The museum also houses a patio, VitenPlassen, that overlooks the sea and gives you the space to relax after a day of brain-teasing.
